Herm Fisher, Irving Price, and Helen Schelle started Fisher-Price in Aurora, New York in 1930. Fisher had a background in toy and game manufacturing. Price and Schelle both came from retail management. The first line of Fisher-Price toys was released in 1931. The “16 Hopefuls” were introduced at the World’s Fair. But it wasn’t until the Snoopy Sniffer came out in 1938 that people really started to take notice. The realistic toy would “walk” behind you as you pulled on his leash. Five million were sold between 1938 and 1964.

Between 1942 and 1946, Fisher-Price ceased making toys and instead it aided in the war effort, making boxes, crates, and parts for fighter planes. However, toy production began again following the war and 1950 saw the introduction of Buzzy Bee, Fisher-Price’s first plastic toy. By the end of the ‘50s more than 39 toys were part of the Fisher-Price line, and half of them incorporated plastic parts. In 1957, favorites such as the “corn popper” and the xylophone were made; these two toys are still popular today. 1959 saw the introduction of the Safety School Bus; it launched one of the most popular toy lines in history.

In 1961, Fisher-Price established the first “Play Laboratory.” The toy-filled room let designers and engineers observe children interacting with the toys they made. It was so popular that it is still used today. The Rock-a-Stack and Chatter Phone were introduced in 1962. In 1968 Fisher-Price was bought by the Quaker Oats Company. During the ‘70s Fisher-Price began making baby toys, and expanded their brand appeal by adding the Muppets to their toys. In 1985, “The Little People” was officially recognized as a registered trademark. During the ’90s Fisher-Price became part of the Mattel brand of toys and expanded their line to include Power Wheels and Rescue Hero action figures.

There is a difference between the catalog year and the calendar year, so you could have bought a 1984 catalog-year toy in 1983.
